What is an IP address ?

An IP ("Internet Protocol") is a unique address that identifies each computer connected to the Internet and allows communication between different machines.

There are IP version 4 (old standard, for example: 78.87.433.12) and version 6 (new standard, for example: 2001:0db8:0000:85a3:0000:0000:ac1f:8001). IPv6 addresses have been launched because of the saturation of IPv4 addresses.
